Key highlights of Mission Mausam include:
- Cutting-edge technology: Advanced weather surveillance systems, high-performance computers (HPC), and next-generation radars and satellites.
- Expanded observation networks: The installation of 50 Doppler Weather Radars (DWR), 60 Radio Sonde/Radio Wind stations, and other vital equipment to increase atmospheric and oceanic data collection.
- Improved forecasting models: Enhanced predictions through AI/ML integration and data-driven methods, with better temporal and spatial accuracy.

With a sanctioned budget of ₹2,000 crore for 2024-26, this ambitious project aims to significantly upgrade the nation’s capacity to predict and manage weather-related events, making India “Weather-ready” and “Climate-smart.”
The primary goals of Mission Mausam include enhancing India’s observational infrastructure, improving the understanding of weather and climate processes, and advancing forecasting capabilities. The initiative will establish:
- 50 Doppler Weather Radars (DWR) to improve real-time monitoring of weather systems.
- 60 Radio Sonde/Radio Wind (RS/RW) stations for upper atmosphere observations.
- 100 disdrometers, which measure raindrop size distribution, crucial for rainfall prediction.
- 10 Wind Profilers, to gauge wind patterns at various altitudes.
- 25 radiometers, which detect atmospheric radiation to refine weather models.
- Marine Automatic Weather Stations, including 10 ocean-based stations, to capture critical marine data.
In addition, Mission Mausam will leverage cutting-edge technology by integrating high-performance computers (HPC) with next-gen radars, satellites, and AI/ML-based models for more accurate and efficient forecasting. It aims to improve both spatial and temporal weather predictions, enhancing the accuracy of early warnings and air quality data.
This mission’s success will rely on collaborative efforts between MoES institutes, such as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. They will work alongside international and national research institutes, academia, and the private sector.
By 2026, Mission Mausam is expected to strengthen India’s resilience against climate change, improve public safety, and ensure better management of natural hazards through advanced weather interventions and data dissemination. The initiative will not only benefit the agricultural, aviation, and infrastructure sectors but also play a critical role in disaster management and environmental conservation, creating substantial socio-economic benefits.
