The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) was introduced to address several critical issues in India’s healthcare landscape. In India, public health services are often overburdened due to the high demand and limited funding, which hovers around 1.2% of the GDP. Public health facilities struggle with a lack of resources, shortage of trained staff, and irregular supply of necessary medicines and equipment, limiting the quality of services. Meanwhile, private healthcare facilities cater to about 70% of healthcare visits and hold roughly half of the total hospital beds, yet they often consist of small, unregulated units concentrated in urban areas, which leaves rural and economically disadvantaged populations underserved.
The financial strain on individuals is significant, with 62% of health expenses coming from out-of-pocket costs. This heavy financial burden is a primary driver of poverty in the country, with nearly 60 million Indians pushed back into poverty each year due to healthcare costs. PM-JAY aims to alleviate this by expanding access to healthcare for the economically vulnerable, reducing the reliance on out-of-pocket spending, and mitigating the socio-economic impacts of healthcare expenses. Through PM-JAY, the government seeks to provide financial protection and health security to its population, addressing both immediate healthcare needs and long-term financial stability for millions of Indian families.
